About Us

Who We Are

Since 2003, the Capitol Region Medical Reserve Corps (CR-MRC) has served the greater Hartford region in “blue skies” times and during emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the unit from 250 members to an unprecedented roster of 1,800+ members who contributed more than 20,000 hours of service!

We meet to train on a monthly basis (except August) to ensure our volunteers are ready to respond.

Our primary mission is to provide medical and non-medical support to local or regional response teams during emergencies such as Points of Dispensing (PODs) (aka clinics) and emergency shelters.

We also augment local first responder medical aid stations at community events and support local activities that promote community resilience.

Our Housing Organization

The Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG), serves as the CR-MRC’s Housing Organization. Unlike most Connecticut MRC units that are housed in local health departments, the CR-MRC relies on competitive grant funding to sustain its operations. Through the Capitol Region Emergency Planning Committee (CREPC), the CR-MRC is an equal partner in emergency management and preparedness initiatives. Unit leaders meet monthly with regional partners to coordinate, collaborate, and communicate.

Opportunities to Serve

We serve at the request of other agencies such as local health departments, hospitals, nursing homes, and emergency management directors within Hartford and 40 surrounding towns. Requests for volunteer support occur during emergencies when organizations are “surged” such as after a major storm or during an outbreak. MRC volunteers never self-deploy. Opportunities to serve are shared with volunteers on the CT Responds online platform.
